As entrepreneurs, we are often told that to succeed, we need to “invent something new.” But more often than not, the greatest opportunities lie in improving something old.
I recently faced this exact challenge with my niche brand, DefensiveEndBlitz.com. I wanted to use Diatomaceous Earth (DE)—a powerful, natural pest killer—but I hated the application process. It’s messy, it’s dusty, and it’s notoriously difficult to apply to anything that isn’t a flat, horizontal surface.
So, I decided to innovate. I didn’t change the ingredient; I changed the delivery system.
Problem to Solve: The “Dust” Dilemma

Standard diatomaceous earth is a fine powder. While effective, it has three major entrepreneurial “pain points”:
- Waste: Half of it blows away in the wind or simply gets everywhere in the room anyway.
- Safety: You don’t want to inhale the diatomaceous earth dust during application or long-term after it’s in place by accident. Pets, toddlers, seniors, and people with vulnerabilities could be particularly affected.
- Inefficiency: It won’t stick to the underside of edges, corners, or vertical walls where pests like bed bugs and ants actually hide or travel. Who wants a pest solution that is an eyesore, an inconvenience, and only a half-measure, at that?
The Solution: A Hybrid Liquid Suspension

I developed a unique liquid formula that combines food-grade DE with a specific ratio of Castile soap and water, as well as standard preservatives and pH balancers for added shelf life.
The Castile soap acts as a surfactant. In chemistry terms, it breaks the surface tension of the water, allowing the DE particles to stay suspended rather than clumping at the bottom. When sprayed, the soap provides an immediate “knockdown” effect on soft-bodied pests, while the liquid allows the DE to seep into cracks, crevices, and vertical surfaces.
Once the water evaporates, it leaves behind a thin, invisible, and highly effective “defensive shield” of DE that stays exactly where you put it. And I still get to make the claim that it’s 100% natural, which draws important distinctions from other bug sprays while attracting a niche, environmentally conscious consumer with a mind for sustainability and safety.
Seeing the Innovation in Action
I’ve been documenting the results and the application process over at my project site. You can see the full breakdown and the product testing in the video below.
(Note: In the video, you’ll notice the audio is exceptionally clear—I used my iRig microphone setup to ensure that even while spraying outdoors, the “innovator” voice comes through without wind interference!)
Entrepreneurial Takeaway: The “Better Mousetrap”
The lesson here for any Upwardpreneur reader is simple: product-market fit often comes down to user experience (UX). The “market” already knew diatomaceous earth worked. The “user experience” was just terrible. By creating a liquid application, I solved the UX problem without needing to discover a new chemical compound.
But life is not without surprises, and some of them can even be pleasant and useful. What I also found was that the product was even easier to clean up this way than before, which is another huge hassle when dealing with diatomaceous earth or any pest solution, for that matter.
That increases the perceived (and actual) value of the product in the eyes of the consumer, making it useful for all types of crawling insects, but especially ants and bed bugs.
