In the supplement industry, there is a common trap for new entrepreneurs: the “Patented Ingredient” trap.
When I first started developing Smartilage.com, I was dead set on sourcing UC-II collagen. It’s a well-known, patented and specialized form of undenatured collagen. And it doesn’t require a lot of volume, which saves space for packaging and serving size purposes, which I’ll explain a little later.
However, I quickly hit the “Entrepreneur’s Wall.” Between licensing restrictions, massive minimum orders, and supply chain bottlenecks, I realized that chasing a brand name was going to kill my margins and delay my launch. Also, if the product didn’t sell in high volume straightaway, I’d be stuck with a high-priced ingredient that could expire in a few years anyway, wasting away on a shelf in my office.
And after I made some calls and discovered that I’d have to source it from either a pharmaceutical broker in Switzerland for $3,500/bag or India, I knew that was officially the end of that, at least for now.
Instead of giving up, I decided to build a smarter formula. I pivoted from a single “hero” ingredient to a synergistic blend of premium, accessible compounds that provide a more holistic approach to joint health. Doing this may have actually made the product formula better and more complete, as it forced me to research the way in which a lot of key components in the body’s collagen production work when combined in the proper amount.
The “Smart” Formulation Strategy

My goal shifted from “brand name” to “impact.” By moving away from the UC-II patent, I was able to reinvest that budget into a high-dose combination of seven heavy hitters:
- Hydrolyzed Type II Collagen: By using the hydrolyzed form, I ensured the collagen was broken down into smaller peptides that are easier for the body to absorb.
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA): A few years ago, HA was incredibly expensive. Now, it’s more widely available and affordable. It acts as the “lubricant” for the joints.
- MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): Included for its role in supporting connective tissue and reducing oxidative stress.
- Boswellia Serrata: A premium botanical known for its rapid impact on joint comfort.
- Curcumin Extract: The “gold standard” for managing inflammation.
- Vitamin C: Sure, you can get this anywhere, but do most people get enough, and how often is this key synergist overlooked when shopping around for joint health and collagen products?
- Turmeric/Curcumin Extract (19x Strength): Curcumin is the key ingredient of turmeric that aids the body with inflammation, but regular turmeric has only a small percentage of curcuminoids.
And while there are several additional ingredients that help the gut-brain axis in the Smartilage formula, we’ll stick to these seven for the sake of brevity for this post.
Why “Affordable Premium” Wins
As an entrepreneur, my lesson was this: Don’t let the “perfect” (and expensive) be the enemy of the “effective.” Perfectionism is often just another manifestation of procrastination anyways.
By sourcing these ingredients individually, I created a supplement that addresses joint health from multiple angles—structural support, lubrication, and inflammation—rather than just one. This “impactful” approach allows me to offer a high-end product at a price point that actually makes sense for the consumer.
Also, you can get a stand-alone bottle of UC-II collagen for only $22 elsewhere, making it really difficult to compete with at such a low price point per unit.
Transparency in the Booth
I’ve been recording some deep dives into these specific ingredients—explaining exactly why I chose this ratio of Boswellia to curcumin.
(Side note: Using my iRig and windscreen cover has been a lifesaver for these videos. It allows me to record high-quality audio scripts for these explainers without the “hollow” sound you usually get in a home office, which helps establish the authority needed when discussing health supplements.)
The Takeaway for Your Business
If you are hitting a wall with a supplier or a specific “must-have” feature, look at the function of that feature. Can you achieve the same—or better—results by combining other components? Often, the “pivot” is where the real profit is found.
At the end of the day, having to overcome this small hurdle opened my eyes to other important ingredients that I’d overlooked initially, which further supported the overall goal of improving joint and gut health simultaneously.
And, just like hyaluronic acid (HA), I expect that one day UC-II collagen will become more widely accessible to smaller supplement makers so that it’s not prohibitively expensive. Then I’ll most likely switch hydrolyzed type II collagen over to UC-II, since it requires much smaller amounts to be effective. This helps when trying to squeeze a 20-ingredient supplement into capsules that fit in a bottle/container and don’t require 10 capsules per serving to hit the effective dosage of each ingredient.
